How to easily blend essential oils drop by drop

As you may know, essential oils are highly concentrated plant material and only a few drops are ever used in most products.

Here we will go over a few simple steps to blending essential oils by using a drop by drop technique, used only for blending aromas and scenting purposes.

This technique requires you to be mindful of your essential oils, drop by drop, you will experience the scents change. Similar to cooking or music, as you add more items to your recipe, the more powerful the effect.

The great part about the drop by drop method, you can take any recipe and customize them based on smell, what you like.

Measuring

Droppers come in various sizes and have many different openings, usually, you will find a dropper usually drops the same amount of liquid no matter the size. However, essential oils can be lightweight, thin, heavyweight, and thick.

For home and personal use, measuring by dropper is fine but if you were maybe looking to sell your items, weighing your oils so you are exact in measurement is best. The drop by drop method eliminates knowing what notes the oils fall into, your main concern will be your essential oils contraindications and dilution ratio.

Inhalation

The molecules that make up essential oils are volatile and when relaxed into the air forms a gaseous vapor. When inhaled the molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream of your lungs and the olfactory system will absorb the vapors.

These vapors affect the limbic system, which affects our expression of feelings, learning, memory, emotions, and physical drives. Generally, inhalation through the nose will affect memory and feelings.

When essential oils pass through the mouth, through blood vessels, your lungs absorb the oils and your respiratory system is then affected.

Intentions

Basically, what is your purpose for blending this oil? In the drop by drop method, this is not necessary but useful. If you are looking to make a perfume blend and not sure where to go? Setting your intention will let you know which oils to choose. Once you’ve chosen your oils, you can then research the contraindication and dilution amount.

What is it for?

Are you soothing any ailments?

Is it to improve your emotional or physical state?

Do you want to make gifts for others?

Did you grab your notebook yet? Well, now is a good time to take some notes and write down what you intend on using the oils for and any safety concerns.

Blending Drop by Drop

The moment you’ve been waiting for:

Select and smell (close your eyes) 3-5 essential oils that you think will smell good together.

  • Singularly, smell each oil to become familiar with the oils, then hold 2 essential oil bottles together by your nose, smell them and pay attention to what you like and don’t like.

  • Taking notes would be helpful.

  • Now add another bottle to the mix and smell. How do those oils make you feel?

  • Repeat this method until you find oils you like together.

  • Then take a nose breather, a break, and select the essential oils you prefer to use.

You will smell your oils once again, but this time your attention on how long their scent lingers.

Here, you are distinguishing your heavy essential oil from your light essential oils. The longer the scent lingers, usually the heavier the oils.

Your thinner essential oil, such as citrus oils, scent usually vaporizes easiest.

ADDITIONAL STEPS

Choose 3 essential oils from the ones you’ve smelled you feel would blend well together start with the heaviest oil first and add one drop to your 30ml. Carrier oil.

You will drop one by one, each oil (from heaviest to lightest) till you reach the desired scent you like within the specification of the dilution rate.

For example, I’ve chosen cedarwood, bergamot, and lavender. I would drop in the carrier one drop of cedarwood to start, then one drop of my lavender, then one drop of my bergamot, as it is the lightest of the essential oils.

Smell, and repeat dropping the oils I prefer one by one till I reach the dilution maximum.

A few oils to make not of that are very strong, just be careful in your dilution amount as these oils will overpower your blend.
