DIY Bug Spray with Essential Oils

Updated: Oct 3, 2021

One of the best things about summer is going outdoors and feeling the warm sun on our skin. However, being outdoors means BUGS! We all know that bugs can be annoying, but do not worry. They can be repelled!

Many commercial bug repellents are full of chemicals. Chemicals found in these bug sprays can really be harmful to our health. In fact, unnatural bug repellent can cause hives and rashes. If you breathe it in you can get dizziness and vomiting. That is why I use an all-natural DIY bug spray made out of essential oils.

  • Clove is great at repelling ants.

  • Tea Tree is great at getting rid of mosquitoes and flies.

  • Basil is also great at getting rid of flies and mosquitoes.

  • Lavender oil is great at getting rid of house flies.

  • Rosemary oil is great at keeping out mosquitoes.

  • Lemongrass oil is great at keeping out most insects including mosquitoes and horse flies.

  • Peppermint is also great for repelling Bees and Wasps.

Essential Oil Safety

To make this bug repellent spray (specifically for mosquitoes, flies, and bees) you will need:

  • 1/3 cup (2.6oz) of Witch Hazel.

  • 1/3 cup (2.6oz) of Apple Cider Vinegar.

  • 6 drops of Lemongrass oil.

  • 6 drops of Peppermint oil.

  • 6 drops of Lavender oil.

  • 6 drops of Rosemary oil.

  • 8oz. empty spray bottle.

Step 1. Gather all materials.

Step 2. Pour all ingredients into the spray bottle. You can use a funnel to pour the Witch Hazel and Apple Cider Vinegar into the bottle.

Step 3. Spray mixture on all open areas of your body.

⚠️ Warning: do not spray on your eyes and be mindful of little children and pets because some of these essential oils can be harmful to them. You can spray on clothes but test it first on a corner of the cloth to see any discoloring. When to re-apply. I recommend spraying every hour to an hour and a half.
