Purchasing Your Essential oils

Updated: Mar 7, 2022

The popularity of essential oils has made it possible for many distributors and businesses have made it harder to tell which company sells the oils you desire.

Everyone will say they have the best oils of course but there is no "best oil" and every essential oil is, rather should be "therapeutic".

Before purchasing any oils it is best to make a list of oils you like and then check the marketplace.

Use this checklist for guidance:

Find the botanical name

This is useful to differentiate between multiple varieties of oils, especially those with similar common names, which sometimes may or may not have the same therapeutic properties.

Buy real, or authentic oils

Synthetic oils are ineffective for therapeutic use and can cause irritations.

Avoid added ingredients

Adulterated oils decrease the effectiveness of your essential oils but will increase the odds of adverse reactions, therefore, be careful to read the labels.

Organic

Does not mean a better oil but most people choose organic for environmental reasons. We would recommend organic mainly for citrus essential oils as those are distilled from the rinds and will have pesticides.

However, from my knowledge with reading Robert Tisserands's "Essential oil safety", by the time the oil gets distilled the amount of pesticide left in the product will be less than that in your food.

Knowledge and science

Knowing the science behind essential oil is fundamental safety practice, however companies market this as a factor in certifying their essential oils as "therapeutic oils", but the weight of pure oil is measured in farming and distillation. This is the only wayto guarantee pure essential is to know the farming and distillation procedures.

Some companies use scientific information as GC reports as marketing. Give weight in your search for quality oils in growing and distillation information.

Grading

There is no grading system for essential oils, there is no standard for the therapeutic grade, 100% pure, or other related terms. Essential oils are 100% percent pure therapeutic oils otherwise they should not be labeled as such.

Be wary though when marketers use these terms and search for 100% Essential oils with the information given above.

Frangrance

Refrain from purchasing these as they do not have therapeutic effects: " natural fragrance", "fragrance oil", "fragrance", or "perfumes". Most are not real or natural essential oils.

I hope you found this useful in choosing the right essential oil for you.
